Tumblr-ing Down The Rabbit Hole.

Shortly before my departure from Tumblr I posted a blog ripping it for its unoriginality. I shall post it in extended quotation here to set context for this entry.

If you Re-blog anything today...
Why is Tumblr full of such:-
                   vacuous,     boring,    infantile,     lifeless,
      repetitive,                                                              generic,
       Bland,                                                                        soulless,
                                                                                  throwaway,
                                                                        everyday,
                                                             unimaginative,
                                                  unsatisfying,
                                                       Beige,
                                           intellectually vacant,
                                                      Puerile,
                                                     unoriginal,

                                                  Utterly
                                                meaningless
                                                 content?!
——————————————————————————————————
Seriously. You’d think there would be more time spent on actually giving people something original, instead of just reblogging everything. I haven’t even reached 100 people that interest me enough to follow them! It’s all the same!
Are your lives that uneventful?!
If you have no desire to “get personal”, why not be creative? If you can write, write us a story or a poem, folk would love that. If, like me you enjoy taking a topic and running with it, then go for it! don’t be non-committal and sit on the fence all your life. If you have the gift of humour, use it! If you have skill in art, show us! tell us a bit about it too! Ask and answer questions. Do reviews on music, games, film or TV. Comment on the news. Talk about stuff that interests you besides the endless meme’s that gush from the internet akin to an endless stream of pish.

I’ve been looking around for new people to follow- interesting people with worthwhile content- and so far I haven’t even found enough to finish counting on one hand. I have even resorted to visiting pages with endless links to folk’s pages that say “follow me, I’ll always follow back!” to seek out ever-elusive diamonds in the rough. Unfortunately as I say, it’s very few and far between; Usually when I detect wit or intelligence it’s a false alarm, and I’m confronted with endless pictures- reblogged or otherwise- and not a great deal of blogging. Fair enough if you’re actually a great (or even decent) photographer who spends time on his or her photos and dedicates their blog to their art, but most aren’t anything of the sort- they just think they are, because they’ve bought themselves an SLR. And, photo people- caption! Tell us what this is, and why you took a picture of it, tell us the point!
More often that not though, It isn't the blogger’s own work. If you are one of these people that just posts other users’ pictures all day; it’s time to take a bit of a look at your life- and contemplate sticking your head in the oven. But knowing the way of the internet, some twat will take a picture of that and it’ll get1,674 notes on here.
*deep breath*
Wasn’t that fun?! I took my rage and created something totally off-the-cuff for people to read and hopefully draw humour from! try it! Be original!
Or don’t. Do nothing. Waste away in your Tumblr tomb- which is exactly the same  as 90% of everyone else’s. But if you’re in anyway like myself, are sick of the sight of all this, and want to see a bit more zazz- reblog this post.
Lets tell the Tumbling masses to all pull their fingers out and get arses in gear!!
sincerely yours
Scott Smillie

That's what I posted and quite frankly, I mean every single word with the intensity of a .44 magnum bullet. The website hasn't been a great service to me over the time that I have used it, and I am sick of all the spam clogging up things I'm trying to read. Interesting reads are very few and far between, and as I joined it for the purpose of blogging, it really did not achieve that effectively. There have been only two exceptions to Tumblr being a complete catatonic failure:-

  • I met a good friend- Jenny - via Tumblr
  • I started working with a group on  an online music reviewing page, called Let the Music Do the Talking (<click!) which is something which I shall be returning to Tumblr for periodically.
I'd like to round off with a response I had to that particular post I made. Some little cretin reblogged it and wrote underneath " tl;dr"

For those of you unaware, tl;dr is shorthand for "too long; didn't read."

Ladies and gentlemen, I rest my case. Contained within 5 keyboard characters is the reason why I find Tumblr as good as worthless. Have you ever seen a more damning display of intellectual laziness and cowardice so concisely put? You get people like this everywhere of course, but the fact that someone will arbitrarily read 300 small posts on this website and scoff when he comes to one long one; demonstrated that I was in the wrong place.

Henceforth, I blog only for Scott Smillie, and for anyone and everyone else who enjoys what I write here.

Over the next while I'll be posting some of what I reckon are my best posts from there. Gonna limit it to three- just so anyone new has something to get started on when they arrive, and so they get a flavour of what's to come!
